Five ways to teach about Fairtrade cocoa – and a chocolate competition!

Fairtrade Fortnight (26 Feb-11 Mar) is fast approaching and what better way to celebrate than with chocolate and our Pa Pa Paa education resources!

We called them ‘Pa Pa Paa’ because it’s the motto of the cocoa cooperative that we work with in Ghana. It means ‘best of the best’ in the Twi language.

To help you get started, here are our top picks for Fairtrade Fortnight:

1. Lesson plan - Trade: A fair deal?

Compare the lives of ordinary cocoa farmers and members of the Kuapa Kokoo Fairtrade cooperative in this lively and thought-provoking lesson. Can be used in PSHE, Geography or for spoken language in English.

2. Bean to Bar workshop

We offer school workshops which tell how cocoa gets turned into chocolate and how Fairtrade ensures cocoa farmers are treated fairly. We are happy to tailor the workshops according to your curriculum needs.

3. Primary: Be a Cocoa Farmer activity kit

Grab your machete, chop open your cocoa pod, harvest and dry your cocoa beans! Get your whole class involved in finding out how farmers in Ghana make the cocoa that goes into your chocolate bar with our kinaesthetic activity kit.

4. Secondary: Find out how Fairtrade social enterprises are the future of business

Fairtrade Fortnight is a great opportunity for business studies students to find out about Fairtrade companies that are doing business differently.

5. Secondary: The trading game

This role-play game is intended to give students a hands-on insight into the experiences of the different groups in the ‘chocolate production chain’ and will generate much activity, discussion and debate!

We would love it if you could share your photos with us on Twitter of your class using our Pa Pa Paa resources. At the end of Fairtrade Fortnight, we’ll send our favourite photos a chocolatey surprise, thanks to our friends at Divine Chocolate!*
